10 learnings (that everyone should hear):
- Insecurity is a natural human condition. These entrepreneurs have built incredible companies and personal wealth, but all open up privately about their personal and professional insecurities. The feeling that we aren't doing enough, or may suddenly get exposed as an imposter, is natural. Opening up about these insecurities is the key to managing their influence on our lives.
- Liminal moments are everything. It's tempting to have every minute of a retreat be some structured programming, but what I've learned is that the side conversations and little casual moments are where the gold happens. Embrace the liminal moments.
- Get around people who create potential and kinetic energy. I like to think of potential energy as the energy of WHAT COULD BE and kinetic energy as the energy of WHAT IS. The best people will help you convert your potential energy to kinetic energy and help you build more potential energy.
- The dose makes the poison. There are things that are fine in small doses that become poisonous in large ones. Free time, as an example, is great in certain quantities, but makes you feel lost in larger ones. Find the right dose.
- Good and bad changes happen slowly, then all at once. Small daily actions compound positively or negatively in our lives. Compounding starts slowly but then accelerates faster than you can imagine. If I repeat this action for 100 straight days, will I be better off than at the start?
- Be a collector of interested people. I love being around people who are interested (in anything). Being INTERESTED is what makes you INTERESTING. Collecting people in my life who are interested in something fills my cup.
- Allow things to be experiments. Not everything has to become a business. Let things remain as experiments. Paradoxically, it sometimes leads to the most interesting businesses in the long run.
- Everyone relates and communicates in different ways. Some people are traditional, and some people can only connect with others in non-traditional ways. Make sure to create formats where different styles can gel and shine.
- Big places make you think bigger. When you spend time in big places (physically or metaphorically), your mind is forced to think bigger. It expands your view and potential.
- Find the giants (and stand on their shoulders). There are giants in every field that you can learn from. Spend time around people who level you up.
Bonus: Get in the room where it happens. There are rooms where big thinkers are dreaming on the future. Get in these rooms if you want to level up. Note to self: Create more of these rooms to enable open access for people of varied backgrounds and means to join (stay tuned!).
