After completing the energy audit, ask yourself these three questions:

1. How close are you to spending 80% of your time in your Zone of Genius?

Ideally, you should spend 80% of your time in your Zone of Genius.

2. What is the monetary value to business annually if you get to 80%?

A good Chief of Staff ranges from $100-200k in compensation depending on experience (2023 CoS comp study).

3. What tasks are you doing that are outside your Zone of Genius?

Look for the profile or patterns in these tasks. Identifying the patterns between these tasks can help you identify the archetypes needed in a CoS (e.g. are they often related to operations, finance, content/communications, or something else?).

My rule of thumb

The size of the opportunity is so big that the company and your investors cannot afford you getting bogged down in non-strategic, non-Zone of Genius activities.
Therefore, a Chief of Staff is a no-brainer if you are not already at 80%. </aside>

You should estimate a value increase of at least $500k to hire a CoS, which can cost between $100-200k (2023 CoS comp study).
There should be at least 3x potential in this hire. If there isn’t this much, then CoS is overkill or not a good fit for the business. </aside>
